Qawwali at the Museum

curated
by
HIBAH MIAN

In collaboration with RAAHI

Qawwali originated in the Indian subcontinent, which historically includes the present-day countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Qawwali has deep roots in the regions that are now part of Pakistan and North India, particularly with the influence of Sufi saints such as Amir Khusrow in the 13th century. Today, it is an integral part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Pakistan and continues to be celebrated and performed widely.

description

As part of the Dreamland exhibit, supported by the City of Mississauga and Museums of Mississauga, "Raahi x Dreamland: Qawwali at the Museum" offered an immersive experience that beautifully blended music, history, and culture. Dreamland, a tribute to the resilience of immigrant and refugee narratives, explored themes of trauma, transformation, and the search for identity. RAAHI’s Qawwali performance brought the ancient spiritual tradition to life, inviting the community to experience its transcendent power. Much like the stories shared within Dreamland, Qawwali bridged worlds and spoke to the universal human experience—one of connection, healing, and celebration. Through this performance, Raahi x Dreamland created a space where art and spirituality united, offering a moment of reflection on the spaces we inhabit and the journeys we undertake. As the soulful and spiritual sounds of Qawwali filled the museum, the performance served as a reminder that music, like all forms of art, transcends borders and has the power to connect, heal, and celebrate our shared humanity.

About RAAHI:

RAAHI & Co was birthed from the idea of bridging the generational gap between our elders and youth through music. Our mission involves reclaiming the sound of qawwali, folk and semi-classical music in the West, in a way that authentically links us to our roots. As members of the South Asian diaspora, we share a deep yearning to reestablish a connection with our heritage. "RAAHI", translating to traveler, extends an invitation for you to embark on a cultural journey with us, as we travel through sound.
